A South African Dinner

5/21/09
Continuing on with our eventful week, Murray’s sister, Debbie picked us for dinner at her friends in Khayelitsha. Khaye means house..or home. I have since learned that Khayelitsha is the second largest township in Cape Town. The family welcomed us with open arms. There were 3 children. Two boys (9 and 7) and a 4 year old girl. The first thing I noticed was there fabulous hair. The boys had full heads of thin, neat dreadlocks. The little girl had a headfull of tight curls. They delighted in our company. After shaking our hands the oldest boy mustered up the nerve to ask us, “What is the most famous building in the United States?” Jamie and I were impressedly dumbfounded. We thought on it and both agreed that the first thing that came to mind was the statue of Liberty, but that wasn’t a building. So I asked him, “What do YOU think it is?” His response was, “The White House” Clever boy! We then asked him if he knew who are current president was. Given the raging popularity of our fearless leader here in Africa, I wasn’t surprised when he immediately responded, “Barrack Obama”. However, his father was impressed as he didn’t think he actually knew that much about the US.

For dinner we had “stave pap” (I’m sure I spelt that wrong), boerwoers and veggies. We were also served sugar beans and homemade mint chocolate muffins for dessert. We enjoyed all of it and felt more than welcomed into their home. I must say that this stave stuff is different. It looks like mashed potatoes (and is often confused as such), but has a more bland and grainy flavor. It is a popular staple for meals because it is easy to make, cheap, and filling. Therefore, you don’t need a lot of it. The sugar beans were probably my favorite part of the meal. They were absolutely delicious.

While we ate the kids put on a show called “Crazy Games”. It reminded me of the popular Nickelodeon show “Double Dare” where the contestants race through these crazy, and often messy, obstacle courses. The big difference with “Crazy Games” was that the contestants were dressed in the most bizarre of costumes and the courses were more bizarre than any Double Dare episode. We watched one where they were dressed as rats and had to run the opposite direction on a treadmill to retrieve their tail, in another race they donned wine bottle costumes and had to fit into a crate. We got a massive kick out of watching these fall all over themselves and their awkward suits.
